NorthTec proud to support Ngāti Hine Festival
NorthTec showcased its Maunga Kura Toi – Bachelor of Māori Arts programme at Te Āhuareka o Ngāti Hine Festival and was also a corporate sponsor for the event held in Moerewa from 28 to 30 March.
Tutors Lorraine King, who teaches rauanga (visual arts) and Te Hemo Ata Henare, a rāranga (weaving) specialist, were busy demonstrating their craft along with current ākonga and graduates of the degree programme.
Visitors to the NorthTec stand, especially tamariki, took the opportunity to join in and get creative by designing their own flag, creating things out of uku (clay) and watching the experienced weavers at work. Others came by to discuss NorthTec study options, especially in Toi Māori (Māori Arts), Te Reo and Tikanga, or simply spend some time watching the artists.
Lorraine King and Te Hemo Ata Henare were also featured artists in the Te Āhuareka o Ngāti Hine Toi Māori Exhibition, which opened on 27 March and runs until 10 April at the Toanga o Te Ao Gallery in Kawakawa.
Te Āhuareka Ngāti Hine Festival 2025 was the first held since 2019 and brought thousands of people to Otiria Marae to celebrate the occasion.
NorthTec Executive Director, Toa Faneva, said he was pleased and proud for NorthTec to be able to support the event as a corporate sponsor.
He said: “NorthTec Tai Tokerau Wānanga is the largest tertiary provider in our region, and we work closely with iwi and hapū to provide education and training which meets the needs of our communities.
“Our Maunga Kura Toi programme is well known for helping talented artists develop their skills and create beautiful works of art. We also deliver a range of Te Reo and Tikanga Māori programmes, and this year we have launched a new nursing degree, Puawānanga Tapuhi Māori – Bachelor of Nursing Māori.”
